“Imagined sound is the most suggestive and powerful”

This exhibition brings together the results of the art research carried out in recent years by sound artist Edu Comelles around the visualization of sound. All the works on exhibition here are the result of an artistic and formal investigation of sound and its graphic representation through frequency spectrograms. The project explores the visual and expressive abilities of the sound medium through the abstraction of its spectrographic form. This art investigation uses as raw material sounds and field recordings which form part of the artist’s daily life.

From these sounds and recordings, spectrographic images were extracted which became the basis on which to build the visual and volumetric imagery that makes up this project.
Although sound is the basis of the research, this tends to be ignored in the project in order to make way for its visual and contemplative dimensions.

The idea stems from the ability of the medium of sound to trigger the imagination. This project explores the need to imagine what the images here sound like, and through this reverie, to reflect on the importance of listening.

Spectre seeks to hide realities behind a veil coded with graphics, drawings, waves and textures that, below the surface, hide subjective experiences which are unattainable for the observer. Spectre seeks to invite the contemplation of sounds lost under a metaphorical visual language.

Finally, this catalogue serves either as documentation about the project itself and also frames the latest iteration of the “Spectre” project. According to this, the following pages encapsulate a unique spectrogram related directly to the Electromagnetic Fields that shape the work entitled “Birthday” (described after those pages). Through that, the author closes a loop, rubricating an exploration from the audible into the visible and back again, understanding also this very catalogue as one more piece on this artistic research.
